Sounds like the Sabres are going to have to choose which one to keep. The dilemma is, which one?

| no tough decision in my book, the guy who superglued his face back together to play in our last game is my choice. danny's got the stats, but drury's got the cup experience and playoff game winners that put him head and shoulders above all others on this team. screw this co-captain shit, make drury the face of the sabres and we will contend year after year. |

Drury hands-down would be the one to keep ... I expect Stafford and an in-shape Connolly to replace Briere's scoring for the most part ... agree that Drury should be the face of the franchise now and would probably help in attracting free agents to Buffalo ... but, how much is too much to pay him? I'm sure he'll get offered at least $6M by someone - when you factor in keeping Zubrus, locking up Vanek long-term, and adding much needed grit to our D corps, I'm not sure we could afford much more than that
has anyone heard the rumor that Drury wants to play on the west coast? I don't know that the Kings, Sharks, or Ducks are in any better shape financially than Buffalo though |

assuming the golisano will spend to the cap we will get some relief there as it is expected to rise. the sabres made a considerable chunk of change this season so hopefully the fan response, which really was something to behold, will translate to more $ on the ice. i'm as big a zuby fan as you will ever find, hell i think his mystery injury may have been the biggest hidden factor in why the sabres just lost that series (not making excuses rather looking for reasons) but if it comes down to keeping him (and likely another player too) or losing drury - well there's no question in my mind. we need a proven leader if we want to continue to contend. if it isn't drury it should be briere, but certainly not neither. |

colfax found this in the denver post that references what you were talking about
quote: Chris and (his wife) Rory own homes both in the Buffalo area and in Manhattan Beach, Calif., where they live close to Rob and Brandy Blake.
"It's a summer home to put our stuff and cribs in," Drury said. "We had visited a lot with Rob being out there and my wife being friends with Brandy, so we just liked it and it felt like a nice fit."
That seems to raise the possibility that Drury could be prone to listening to an offer from the Kings, but Drury has made it clear he doesn't handle losing well - and with the Kings in a rebuilding mode, that might be a tough sell. And Drury truly is enjoying playing in Buffalo.

| It would be nice to keep both and you would hope that they would take less money to stay together. Ok i know that I am dreaming but I have to agree keep Chris. Danny is a good goal scorer but he isnt a 50 goal scorer. With the offense we put up this year I dont worry about losing Dan's production. Chris just wins, and I like the thought of having the 2 best American players (IMO) on the Sabres, with Chris and Ryan |

| If we lose Drury he would be an irreplaceable part of this team, easy as that. There is no way Tom G can let that happen. Drury fills seats, I say open the check book and pay him what he deserves. My feeling is he wants the cup he knows there are positions that need to be addressed and I believe he would take less to stay than Briere. Danny B is a great player but as proved VS teams like Ottawa when forced to play against bigger more physical lines he has a glaring weakness and he plays small. Thus the reason he never is on the ice on penalty kills. If you get paid franchise player $ you need to be a two way player. My vote is Chris all the way..... |

This subject makes me crazy. if Ott has its top 3 stars signed to longterm deals, why the fuck can't we. Briere and Drury certainly don't deserve more money than any these guys. Sign both Darcy!

| If he doesn't want to be part of a rebuilding program, Anaheim would also be a really strong option too. If I had his kind of money, living in LA vs Buffalo would be a no brainer :) |

| well one counterpoint is money goes much further in WNY than LA plus our schools are very highly rated and for drury that's a big plus (two young kids). i get the feeling neither drury nor briere care all that much about limelight |

two key points invalidate this blog's credibility
1- sabres fans hit the archives and found where drury did indeed congratulate danny after the tying goal in game two 2- the sabres did not have a morning skate the day after game 2 because they were travelling to ottawa
i have a feeling this is a (weak) attempt by hab fan to poison the water and try to break up the sabres' dynamic duo. i'm still hopeful both players can be signed |

| yeah, I thought it sounded a little sensational ... I hope he was right about the Sabres having a 'handshake deal' in place to lock up Drury ... could definitely see Montreal making a big run at Briere - hadn't thought about that before but it does make some sense [sure hope he leaves the division though] |

this made me laugh a little For the record, the Buffalo Sabres are hoping Chris Drury comes back next season. If that statement doesn't seem all that newsy, you should know that it was, in fact, news to their co-captain. Drury made it clear Monday that he would prefer to stay with the Sabres rather than explore unrestricted free agency. He loves the town, loves the team. That is, he said, if the team wants him back. If, Chris? That puck to the mush affect your noggin? "Nobody has told me that, so I'm not going to assume anything," he said.
Buffalo News
Daniel Briere reiterated Monday he wants to remain a Buffalo Sabre, and the free agent-to-be indicated he'd accept the famed hometown discount.
