my take:

Sabres Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA)

Forwards
Max Afinogenov 3,500,000 - bye Max. love the speed, hate the indecision. unless the sabres longest tenured player is willing to take a 2.5 million dock in pay, max will be on a russian team next season
Andrew Peters 500,000 - would like to see him go as i view him as mostly useless, but lindy likes him so i think he'll be back. but what a boring fighter...
Matt Ellis 475,000 - didn't see much from matt this season, and i'm not sure what more to expect from this 28 year old so i wouldn't be heartbroken to see him go
Dominic Moore ? - waste of a 2nd round pick in that trade deadline move. found zero identity with the team when we needed his leadership the most. time to move on

Defense
Jaroslav Spacek 3,300,000 - would like to see jaro back, but not sure that salary is justified. looks like the safe money is on jaro's days with the sabres being over
Teppo Numminen 1,100,000 - should retire from the nhl, but would make a great coach if he wants to. i think his family sold the hockey stick company, so maybe he has the time

Goalies
Mikael Tellqvist ? - would rather see what enroth can bring to the table as #3 goalie. it's getting around that time

Sabres Restricted Free Agents (RFA)

Forwards
Drew Stafford 984,200 - shows streaks of potential and is worth a 1-year QO to see if he can improve his game even more
Clarke MacArthur 687,500 - same as drew stafford. we can't afford to let these guys go because their potential hasn't been realized yet, but their leash is getting shorter
Patrick Kaleta 500,000 - sign him. probably the best instigator since matt barnaby, and a crowd pleaser who can rally his team with one big hit
Mark Mancari 555,500 - a long-term sabres prospect that will also be signed. could be a fantastic player someday, or not.

Defense
Andrej Sekera 659,000 - sign him. had lapses, but what young defenseman doesn't. i'm certain he will get better, and envision him with butler as a formidable duo in the future

For what it's worth my take:

I agree with you for the most part Craig but not on Sekera I just don't see it when we have other players that can fill his position in the minors Myers for example much better decision making and a ton more talent. Sekera just made stupid mistakes every game mainly skating back behind his own net and turning it over time after time.

I also think Tellquist would be a smart move, Enroth is playing right now in the playoffs for Portland watch either online or NHL channel and you can see this guy is still not ready for the big time. If I am not mistaken he had 4 maybe 5 games where he gave up 6 or more goals. The Sabres need a back up that can win half of there starts.

I think Stafford has the parts to be a great player he needs to grow this offseason and become the dominate player he was with the fighting souix (sp). Bring in some real D-men and wave bye to our so called capitan Rivet, Sekera , and Teppo. I believe the front office has to make some moves to bolster the D or we could be in for another long season with Miller getting peppered with 30+ shots a night.

Max, Andrew and Ellis need to go. I would love to see Kennedy called up and given a legitimate shot to make the roster I think he is ready to go. I think D Moore tried to hard to look pretty he was a wasted 2nd round rental in my opinion.

Now for Kaleta I say he is a must if the Sabres plan on selling tickets to the old neighborhood.

i'm as big a lindy fan as you could hope to find, but even i won't support them coming back if we don't reach the postseason next year

"Tom Golisano and Larry Quinn today announced that General Manager Darcy Regier and head coach Lindy Ruff will return next season in their current roles with the organization," the statement read. "Ownership is very excited to have these two individuals return to help lead the organization back to the playoffs next season."

I;m a little late on this but I agree with craig. Sekera will keep getting better. We all know how I feel about Kaleta. I dont mind keep Max, at a reduced rate, with incentive cluase. When he finaly got to play at the end of the season he was a unselfish 2-way player.

with tellqvist flying the coop to russia, and enroth who performed very well in the playoffs for portland, i think it's time to see what he can do on an nhl level. not necessarily as a #2, but he certainly deserves a shot

i agree with giving him a look. We haven't done real well trying to find a decent back up from outside the origination the last couple of years

in other news, sabres signed gigantic defenseman tyler myers. i guess due to his age he is not expected to spend much, if any, time on portland next season. so we'll be seeing a lot of him on the blue line next year. here's hoping he can be the next zdeno chara, minus the geico caveman

tyler is dominating in the memorial cup tournament, most observers are saying he is head-and-shoulders above the rest of his league (no pun intended, at least i don't think)
